Growing Home is a social enterprise organization serving homeless and low-income people through a transitional employment program in the organic farming business. Over the past five years Growing Home has made great strides towards accomplishing its mission. Our organization has been recognized by many people and organizations in Chicago and nationally. Growing Home has recently been highlighted on National Public Radio and in the Chicago Tribune. According to the Chicago Tribune, “[Growing Home] happens to be a remarkable social experiment that turns out high-end organic produce while helping Chicago's homeless get off the streets and back into the labor force.” Since 2003 Growing Home has operated two sites that serve as the base for the transitional employment program: a certified organic farm on the 10 acres of farmland that it owns in LaSalle County, Illinois; and an urban market garden on the south side of Chicago. Growing Home's mission is to provide job training and create employment opportunities for homeless and low-income people in Chicago within the context of an organic agriculture business.
